How a location QR code works

The code encodes a geo: link containing a latitude and longitude. Scanning it opens the phone's default maps app at that exact point, ready to navigate to.

Coordinates beat a street address whenever the address is ambiguous, shared with other units, or does not exist at all.

How to make a QR code for a location

  1. Find the exact spot's coordinates (see below).
  2. Enter the latitude and longitude, keeping any minus sign.
  3. Style the code — the map-pin icon makes its purpose obvious.
  4. Download it and scan it to confirm the pin lands where you expect.

Where it earns its keep

  • Deliveries and loading docks. Point drivers at the right entrance rather than the front door.
  • Trailheads, parking lots and access gates. Places with no useful street address.
  • Festival and campus maps. One code per stage, booth or building.
  • Property and land listings. Send people to the lot, not the nearest ZIP code.
  • Wedding and event invitations. Guests navigate to the venue's actual entrance.
  • Field equipment and utilities. Tag an asset with where it is supposed to be.

Getting it right

Finding the coordinates: in Google Maps, right-click the exact spot and click the numbers at the top of the menu to copy them. On a phone, press and hold to drop a pin and read them off the panel.

Mind the sign. Latitude is negative south of the equator, longitude negative west of Greenwich — which includes all of North and South America. A dropped minus puts the pin on the wrong continent; this is the single most common mistake with location codes.

Keep the decimal places. Five is roughly a meter. Rounding to two puts you a kilometer (over half a mile) away.
