QRSpike vs. the Typical QR Code Generator

Most QR code generators do the same core job, and so do we. The differences are in what "free" means, what you pay, how you are billed, and what happens to your printed codes. Here is an honest side-by-side — including where others are ahead.

Never

Our free QR codes never expire. No trial codes, no signup, no watermark.

$6/mo

Trackable, editable codes — against a $22/mo average elsewhere.

Monthly

Pay month to month. No annual contract needed to get our best price.

"Free" should mean your code keeps working

Here is a pattern that catches people out. A site offers a free QR code. You make one, print it on business cards or flyers, and hand them out. A week or two later the code starts showing a "this code is no longer active" page instead of your website — because what you were given was a trial code that routes through the provider's servers, and the trial has ended. Every printed copy now advertises their subscription instead of your business.

QRSpike's free QR codes don't work that way. Your web address, Wi-Fi details or contact card are printed directly into the pattern, so nothing passes through us when the code is scanned and there is nothing for us to switch off. No account, no email, no watermark, and no expiry date.

Codes that do route through a server — the trackable kind whose destination you can change — are clearly labeled as a paid feature, come with a 30-day trial that needs no credit card, and say up front what happens if you stop paying: they pause, and the same printed codes come back the moment you resubscribe. We would rather you choose that knowingly than discover it from a customer.

Before you print with any provider

  • Ask whether the code is static or dynamic. Static codes can't expire; dynamic codes depend on the provider staying paid.
  • Read what happens when a trial ends — and whether it ends after 7 days, 14 or 30.
  • Check for scan caps. A cap that pauses redirects is very different from one that only stops counting.
  • Compare the monthly price, not just the advertised one. Many headline prices assume a year paid up front.

How we worked out "typical"

The "Typical generator" column summarizes published entry-level pricing and policies for a sample of a dozen well-known QR code generators, drawn from independent comparisons published in May–July 2026 and providers' own help pages. We don't name them because prices change often and we'd rather not misquote anyone; check any provider's current pricing before deciding. Last reviewed October 2026.

  1. Average of the eight providers in our sample that offer month-to-month billing. The median is $11/mo and prices range from $7–$60.
  2. Average per-month cost of the lowest advertised plan across eleven providers, most of which require paying for a year up front. The median is $9/mo and prices range from $5–$25.
