How an SMS QR code works

The code encodes an SMS link. Scanning it opens the messaging app with your number in the To field and, if you added one, your wording already typed. The sender reviews it and presses send — nothing is sent automatically.

Where it earns its keep

  • Keyword opt-ins. Pre-fill the keyword so nobody mistypes it and fails to join.
  • Check-in and arrival texts. "I'm outside" on a delivery or collection point.
  • Voting and polls. Pre-fill the option so the reply is already formatted.
  • Repair and service requests. Pre-fill an asset number printed next to the code.

Getting it right

The pre-filled message is what makes this worth using. Without it you may as well use a phone code. With it, replies arrive in a consistent format you can actually process.

Include the country code on the number, for the same reason as a phone code.

Short-code numbers behave differently. If you are using a five- or six-digit marketing short code rather than a normal number, test the code on both iPhone and Android before printing — handling varies.
