How to Create an SMS QR Code

An SMS QR code encodes a phone number and an optional pre-written text message. When scanned, the user's device opens their messaging app with the recipient number and message already filled in — ready to send with one tap.

Why Use an SMS QR Code?

Text messaging is one of the most direct ways to reach someone. An SMS QR code removes the barrier of looking up a number and typing out a message by hand. One scan and the user's messaging app opens with everything pre-populated, so they only need to hit send.

This is ideal for situations where you want to collect opt-ins, gather quick responses, or make it easy for people to text a keyword to a specific number — common in marketing campaigns, customer support, and event registration.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Log in to your QRSpike account and go to your Dashboard.
  2. Click Create QR Code.
  3. Select SMS from the QR code type dropdown.
  4. Enter a name for your QR code.
  5. Select the appropriate Country Code from the dropdown and enter the Phone Number you want to receive the text message.
  6. Optionally enter a pre-written SMS Message (up to 256 characters). This message will appear in the user's messaging app, ready to send.
  7. Customize the Color, Background Color, Icon, and Border settings.
  8. Click Preview to review the appearance.
  9. Click Save.
